Muskie fishing in the new millennium
Today's muskie fishing has turned into a far different environment than what most of us have grown up with. The days of just going out and casting standard muskie lures on weed lines and bars are unfortunately way past. Because of the amount of pressure and age of these fish the chances of scoring big by doing this is quite slim. Changes must be made. (The same basic thing has happened with South Florida's Tarpon fishery for the same reason in the past 10 years). IT'S NOT JUST HERE WITH OUR MUSKIES. One of the best ways of circumventing this is to chase emerging fisheries around the US and Canada. (kind of like the global stock market) I do not do this. What we do is specialized pattern development involving both artificial and live bait techniques as regular "portals of pleasure" for casting only seem best used during very specific weather and water periods and these are generally quite short in either days, hours or minutes. Normally there will be one in late Spring to early Summer, one before turnover and one in very late Fall though there can (through weather) be other "small shots" throughout the season. Because of delayed mortality from over stressing a fish in high waters temps (72 degrees and up) we have elected to basically leave the muskies alone in the first part of the season. I believe the number of muskies lost maybe far greater than many believe as their bodies don't all just "float up" when they die. I've only elected to put all this in print because of the hundreds of conversations I've had with very discouraged anglers who simply don't get the opportunity to fish as much as we do and have had their past successes nearly impossible to duplicate. There is hope; all is not lost. Fishing is generally just not quite like it used to be (with lures and with methods) or how it is being portrayed by most sales and media orientated sources but fortunately we have continued to produce consistently high quality catches on a regular basis for all of my customers. This is seldom an instant gratification game.
God bless Very sincerely, Craig
